Discovery Festival is a night out with food for thought: scientific experiments, music, art and inspiring new ideas. Everything revolves around the thrill of discovering new things. 

Discovery Festival was born in Amsterdam, in 2006.The first edition was initiated by a group of young scientific friends who thought something was lacking in the Amsterdam night life: a party with fascinating science and top notch music. On the event they organized, they discovered that many more people had the same idea. Discovery 06 sold out within 15 minutes after the doors opened. 

The group of friends has developed into an extensive network of researchers and organizers who find science important and exciting, and love to infect others with their enthusiasm. 

“Discovery Festival has been a big success in Amsterdam for six years in a row now, but we had been dreaming about a bigger festival for a long time. Simply because we think this combination of science, party and art really deserves a place in other places in the Netherlands as well.” – Alex Verkade, co-founder and chairman of the Very Disco Foundation/Association. 

On the night of Discovery Festival 2010, an independent group of people organized the sold out Night of the Researcher in Rotterdam. Like Discovery, this night was a Dutch instance of ‘European Researchers Night’. In 2011 the festival organizations met up and decided to work together. 

The result: in 2012, there was a Discovery Festival in both Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Moreover, the festival also got an edition in Eindhoven, organized by STRP Festival together with Eindhoven Technical University under the moniker ‘STRP meets Discovery Festival’. In Rotterdam, Science Street Foundation is responsible; in Amsterdam, Transnatural is the leading organization. 

The Discovery Festival 2013 national management team is Tanja Koning (Very Disco, general director), Kuno Bakker (Science Street, Rotterdam), Arjen Bangma (Transnatural, Amsterdam), Dorien van den Hurk (STRP Festival, Eindhoven), Alex Verkade (Very Disco, board member).
